Purnululu Aboriginal Independent Community School (PAICS) is registered for Kindergarten to Year 10.
Classes of (usually 3 grade groups composite) vary between 10– 15 students.
Each class has a generous sized, air-conditioned, well resourced, bright and open learning space. Our learning environments are designed to be home-like and calming.
Staff are very supportive of each other professionally and personally at PAICS, which is important in this remote location. Local Gija staff are highly skilled and committed to supporting students and teachers in the classrooms. Teachers plan, deliver and reflect on all learning experiences collaboratively with Gija staff .
PAICS has a whole school approach to all learning areas of the curriculum and we offer our students a culturally responsive learning environment. PAICS follow the Australian Curriculum and integrates EAL/D into Key Learning Areas. Our Gija language teachers provides students with the opportunity to become literate in their traditional language. As students speak different languages and/or English dialects at home, PAICS supports students in becoming fluent in code switching between their home languages and Standard Australian English.
Students visit the nearby Warmun Art Centre as part of their school program to engage with Elders and learn from their knowledge of Gija language and culture as well as their renowned artistic traditions.
Students enjoy their own table tennis, football field and basketball court, which are used frequently at break time. Each day, our cook creates a healthy home cooked meal, which all students and staff eat at the school’s kitchen together. Our school also has a well-stocked library where students can relax and spend some quiet time reading.
